Emily’s first novel, The Testament of Yves Gundron (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2000), was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year and a San Francisco Chronicle Book of the Month. Brookland (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2006) was also named a New York Times Notable Book, one of the twenty-five best 2006 works of fiction and poetry by the Los Angeles Times, and a 2007 selection of the Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle, the oldest book club in the country. Emily’s fiction, criticism, and essays have appeared in numerous publications, including Story magazine, American Short Fiction, Conjunctions, Poetry magazine, Nextbook, and Bookforum. Emily has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship, an artist’s grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Bard Fiction Prize.
